Leadership Result

Kenneth Clarke: 39.2 per cent, 100,864 votes
Iain Duncan Smith: 60.7 per cent, 155,933 votes

Total number of valid votes: 256,797

Approximately 79 per cent of eligible members voted - more than in the leadership elections of Tony Blair and Charles Kennedy, and surpassing all previous party postal ballots.

Iain Duncan Smith secured a higher personal mandate of all party members than Tony Blair or Charles Kennedy in their leadership elections.
